Jira is getting a fresh new look and navigation

We’re in the process of rolling out these changes and the documentation may not match your experience. Bear with us while we update it to reflect the new changes. More about navigating the new Jira

Optimize field configuration schemes

The Site optimizer can identify and then remove unused fields from a field configuration scheme. You can remove individual fields from your field configuration schemes, but this tool does it quicker and faster.

The processes described on this page are limited to a specific field configuration scheme. If you’re looking to clean up unused fields across your site, the site optimizer can do that too.

When looking for unused fields, the site optimizer looks for fields that:

  • haven’t been used on a work item in the last two years

  • isn’t associated to a screen or scheme

  • was made by a Jira administrator (not created or used by Jira, a plugin, or a Connect or Forge app)

To identify unused fields in your site:

  1. Navigate to the Jira admin panel using the  icon and select Work items.

  2. Select Field configuration schemes in the Fields section.

  3. Choose the field configuration scheme you want to clean up, then select Optimize scheme.

If you haven’t run the Site optimizer recently, it will run an analysis on your site to find the fields that can be reduced. This might take several hours, depending on the size and complexity of your site. You can also re-run the scan using the Update button to ensure you’re seeing the most up-to-date data.

Remove unused fields from field configuration scheme

In the section titled Remove unused fields from this field configuration scheme, use the Review actions to view the identified fields, then Remove fields to clear them out. This removes unused fields from the current scheme as well as any configuration settings.

It doesn’t delete data in fields on work items, though the field values won’t be accessible until you re-associate the field to this scheme.

Create scheme variant

When you create a variant, Jira creates a copy of the currently selected field configuration scheme that only has the fields that are currently in use, and automatically associates it to a project.

To create a field scheme variant:

  1. Choose which project to isolate in its own scheme, then select the Review actions.

  2. Use Remove fields to create the variant

The original field configuration scheme isn’t edited with this action. If you want to revert the change, you can select the previous field configuration scheme in project settings.

Redefine your configuration schemes

This option is only available for field configuration schemes being used by more than one project.

Redefining a field configuration scheme is very similar to creating a scheme variant described above, except that it optimizes every project, and may group several projects under the same scheme.

To redefine your schemes:

  1. Select the Redefine configuration schemes in the Redefine your configuration schemes section.

  2. Review the changes that will be made to your schemes and projects. When you’re ready, use Create new schemes to start the process. This operation may take several minutes to complete.

The original field configuration scheme isn’t edited with this action. If you want to revert the change, you can select the previous field configuration scheme in project settings.
