Rename a status in a workflow

You must have the following to do the things described on this page:

Role: Project admin App admin

Permission: Administer projects

Read more about Jira Cloud permissions

Take care when doing this, as this will affect all projects that use the workflow.

Access you workflow

From a company-managed project:

  1. Select Settings (), then Work items.

  2. Select Workflows, then find the workflow you want to update. Select More (•••), then Edit to open a diagram of your workflow in the workflow editor.

From a team-managed project:

  1. Go to Project settings, then Work types, and select a work type.

  2. Select Edit workflow.

Update a status' name or category

  1. Choose the status you want to rename and select Edit.

  2. Update the Name field in the modal. (Optional: Update the Status category.) Select Update.

  3. Select Update workflow to save your changes. This makes sure all teams and projects using this workflow can use the new status.

Things to keep in mind

  • Statuses can be used in multiple workflows. When a status is renamed, the name will be updated in every workflow (and therefore, every project) that uses it. Be mindful of this when renaming statuses, so that you don’t make unintended changes.

  • Updating a status won’t notify the teams that use it. If you rename a status, you should let your team know so they won’t get confused.
