Optimize fields per space

The site optimizer helps Jira administrators monitor field usage, identify spaces approaching or exceeding the field limit, and clean up unused custom fields.

A space can have up to 700 fields. If a space reaches the limit, admins can’t associate additional fields with that space until its configuration is reduced. Existing fields and data remain available.

This feature is available only on Jira Premium and Enterprise plans. Jira admin permissions are required.

To review field usage:

  1. Select Settings (), then select System.

  2. Select Site optimizer.

  3. In the Limits section, find Fields per space, and select Review.

The Custom fields page shows:

  • spaces approaching or exceeding the field limit

  • unused custom fields that may be suitable for cleanup

  • how field usage has changed over time

To optimize field schemes:

  1. Select Review and optimize to see the field schemes associated with affected spaces.

  2. Review each scheme’s associated spaces, limit status, field usage, and available action.

  3. Select Optimize for a scheme to review its field usage and recommendations.

Depending on the scheme, you can:

  • Remove unused fields: Remove fields that aren’t used by any associated spaces.

  • Create a scheme variant: Create an optimized variant for a selected space without changing the original scheme.

  • Redefine field schemes: Group spaces with similar field requirements and create optimized schemes for them.

  • Delete an unassociated scheme: Delete a scheme that isn’t associated with any spaces.

Removing a field from a scheme won’t delete its work item data. However, its values won’t be accessible until the field is associated with the scheme again.

To clean up unused custom fields:

  1. Select Review and clean up to see custom fields that aren’t used in any spaces, contexts, or screens.

  2. Search by field name or description, then review each field’s type, contexts, screens, last-used date, and recommendation.

  3. Select the fields you no longer need, then select Move to trash.

  4. Review and confirm the action.

Fields moved to trash can be reviewed and restored for a limited time before they’re permanently deleted.
