Schedule work items in your plan according to releases

Along with scheduling work items by sprints or set dates, you can use release dates to schedule work items.
Releases need to be turned on in your plan, and they need to use Fixed dates. If your releases start or end based on a relative date such as As soon as possible, After all work items are completed, or Relative to a previous release, the date appears empty.
First, you need to set your plan to use release dates when a date field is empty on the Estimation and scheduling page in Plan settings. Under Work items with empty start or end dates, select Use dates from their assigned releases.
With this setting enabled, work items with empty date fields are scheduled according to the dates of their assigned release (denoted by an an R next to the date). Adding a date manually overrides the date of the release.
From here, you can then manually adjust a work item’s dates without changing its release assignment. However, if you move a work item beyond the release date, your release falls off-track and the icon turns red.
