Create a new space

Jira apps come with many different space templates created to suit your team's needs and workflow. For example, you can create spaces optimized for scrum or kanban methodologies, or for tracking tasks in business teams like marketing, legal, and HR.

Jira admins can create spaces from any template, including company-managed and team-managed spaces. Any user can create their own team-managed space unless a Jira admin changes this in global permissions. More about global permissions

Create a space

To create a space:

  1. Hover over Spaces in the side navigation, then select Create space ().

  2. Select a category or app from the template library. Templates are grouped by use case or by Jira Cloud app.

  3. Find the template you’d like to use, and select Use template.

  4. Give your space a name.

  5. Select either Company-managed or Team-managed. What’s the difference between company-managed and team-managed spaces?

  6. If you’re creating a space using the team-managed Kanban or Scrum templates, these include recommended defaults for work types, statuses, and views. You can adjust these options and preview the setup before creating your space.

  7. Select Create.

Jira will generate a space key when you create the space, and you'll be set as the space owner by default.

To change these details:

  1. From your space sidebar, select Space settings.

  2. Select Details.

Jira will remember your template choice and use it as the default the next time you create a space.

Create a space with Rovo

You can create a new Jira space from scratch using Rovo, or use your existing work as a starting point. To get started, link documents, upload local files, or select suggested work from your Teamwork Graph. You can also choose from a range of prompts or describe what you want to do in your own words.

To create a space with Rovo:

  1. Hover over Spaces in the side navigation, then select Create space ().

  2. Under Space templates, select Create with Rovo.

  3. Enter a prompt describing the space you’d like to create. You can also add links to Confluence pages and Loom videos, or upload files (like CSVs, images, or PDFs) to provide more context.

  4. Review the suggested configuration, including the space name, key, work types, statuses, and views. You can also choose whether to enable sprints.

  5. Select Next.

  6. While your space is being set up, you can invite your teammates to join, or select I’ll do this later.

  7. Select Next again to view your new space.

Create a space that shares its configuration with another space

Only Jira admins can create spaces with a shared configuration. This setting isn't available on the Free plan.

Spaces with a shared configuration share:

  • work types

  • workflows

  • screens

  • fields

  • permissions

  • notifications

If you change the configuration in one space, it affects all other spaces sharing that setup. We'll notify you if a setting is shared.

To create a space with a shared configuration:

  1. Hover over Spaces in the side navigation, then select Create space ().

  2. Select a category or app from the template library.

  3. Review the available templates and, when you find the right one, select Use template.

  4. Select Company-managed.

  5. Give your space a name.

  6. Select the Share settings with an existing space checkbox.

  7. Select the space you want to share settings from in the Choose space dropdown.

  8. Select Create.
